Congrats to Myriam on receiving an OGS award

Congratulations to Myriam Hoyeck for receiving the highly competitive Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for 2018/2019! Thank you to OGS for supporting our research program.

Elmwood grade 12 bio students take over the Bruin lab

Today we hosted grade 12 biology students from Elmwood School. Myriam and Erin taught the students how to genotype mice using PCR and gel electrophoresis, and we visualized mouse islets using immunofluorescence staining. Myron Smith gave us a tour of the greenhouses and research garden. #protip: hot peppers are a great way to deter groundhogs in your garden!

Our first CIHR Project Grant!

Exciting news for the Bruin Lab! We have been approved to receive 5 years of funding from CIHR to study the contribution of dioxin-like chemicals to beta cell death and dysfunction in diabetes.

Our new favourite celebration spot: Stella Luna

The last few weeks have been super busy in the lab but so much fun. Every single person in the lab, including current students, former students, and even a prospective student, pitched in to help isolate islets. We had Stella Luna gelato as a thank everyone. We will be back!
